Dog Kennels

Types Of Dog Kennels

Different people have different ideas about dog kennels, what they look like and what they do for their dog. Some people will think of the large dog kennels with runs that you find in boarding kennels, others think of a small house type kennel structure, kept in the backyard. Indoor kennels are also available and these are commonly referred to as crates.

Dog Kennels With Runs.

These dog kennels require a lot of space in your backyard, if you want to use a structure similar to those found in boarding practices. These are quite expensive to obtain and are normally only used by dog breeders or boarding companies. They are extremely useful if you have to leave your dog(s) outside for long periods of time, though, as they provide a sufficient amount of safe play area to entertain them as well as a closed off sleeping area.

Standalone Dog Kennels

These are the traditional type of dog kennel that you will find in people's gardens. They are a lot smaller than the dog kennels with runs; they have just enough space for a dog to enter, turn around comfortably and sleep in. These dog kennels are not built to be a play area, they are just built to be a place where they can safely sleep without being affected by the elements e.g. soaked by the rain.

Indoor Dog Kennels (Crates).

These are used to give your dog a safe place to rest while they are in the house. These dog kennels have a lockable door, so your dog cannot get up to mischief in your house while you are out or sleeping upstairs. This may seem cruel but, if used correctly, they can be extremely useful tools e.g. for transporting  a smaller dog to the vet in a comfortable carrier.
